The first chapters of a new manual for iCarpool network administrators is now available. To find them, go to the Smart Transportation main page and look in the left column for the manuals box. There you'll find the new manual chapters and the previously published technical manual.
Amy O'Brien and Mark Hallenbeck (Washington State Transportation Center at the University of Washington) are leading an effort to develop an updated manual. During the past few months they have worked with Smart Transportation volunteers, iCarpool and King County Metro to develop the first few chapters. More chapters have been drafted and are in review now; look for them in the weeks ahead.
Why do we need a manual?
We received feedback that the technical manual wasn't a good fit for many front-line network administrators. The new manual is an attempt to provide something different that might better meet their needs.
Who is this for?
Primarily, front-line network administrators who are using iCarpool's platform to support their commute/ridematching program. Others who may find it useful include regional administrators and people planning TDM/ridesharing programs or projects.
Why can't I find my favorite topic in the manual?
We're developing this manual incrementally. We started with topics related to networks, since they serve as a foundation for many functions in the iCarpool system. We'll cover more topics in the months ahead.
Where can I make suggestions?
Feedback is incredibly helpful. Post suggestions and questions here and/or send them to me (suchans@wsdot.wa.gov) and Amy O'Brien (amyo@uw.edu).
