Since switching from Microsoft MapPoint based geocoding to Google maps, administrators have been noting that some users calendaring their trips are not noticing that when they enter the street address or cross street without a city and state designation, that the address maps to an incorrect location. As an example, I tried to enter a First and Main Street address without any designation of city and/or state end ended up with 1st Ave & Main St, Mosier, OR 97040, USA even though I meant Bellevue, WA. I then added First and Main, WA and the system returned the address of Main Ave & 1st St, Morton, WA 98356, USA (closer (right state) – but still not right (wrong city)).

There are reasons when a trip might be appropriately long (one example was a user telecommuting from Shanghai to Bellevue WA) but we believe these are the exception and not the rule.

When addresses are incorrectly logged, calculations based on miles, and miles reported are skewed by incorrect data entry. Additionally, incentives based on miles could be impacted.

Calendar trips can only be entered or edited within 28 days. To reduce inaccuracies caused by long trips, trip data needs to be monitored routinely to identify and resolve errors of this type. To assist with this effort in the short term, staff at Support@RideshareOnline.com staff will run a weekly query for trips longer than 150 miles and share the results with Regional Network Administrators. The list should be reviewed and records updates as appropraite prior to the 28 day cutoff.

iCarpool has been notified of the issue in case there is some automated solution that can warn users if it looks like an address has been entered in error.

Some users are logging personal trips, ie vacation Seattle to California.  But they are logging these trips daily so it appears they are doing a 500+mile trip every day, instead of just once going there, and then once coming back.
